this is my finished painting for the latest drawing and painting assignment, which i had shown A BIT BACK. with this assignment, we were asked to demonstrate proficiency with sandpaper and i'm somewhat satisfied with the outcome. each week it seems to come a bit easier.

BE-KAWS THE GALLERY IS DUMB:

STORY:
tried to check out the latest KAWS show at HONOR FRASER, but the show was only open from 6 to 8. this translates to a line that stretches far too long and many people left in the cold. i think i just got one of my first true tastes of the street culture. above is a photo of the closest i was able to get.

i think i'm going to start drawing more of these. i was able to get some reference photos after chasing this one down in my neighborhood.

NEW MIRROR
ON THE MOON.

STORY:
on this last, beautiful sunday, the staple design SPRING 2009 COLLECTION made its debut on the internet. in the collection, i had the privilege of helping to produce two designs, which would become three items. it is truly a complete honor to see my work displayed under the name of STAPLE DESIGN. i've been incredibly grateful to learn so many things from JEFF (NG) STAPLE over the years, whether through his blog or in interviews.

last year, to show how grateful i was for everything learned, i did a SIMPLE DRAWING based on a quote that jeff had NOTED on his blog. i attached the a scan of the drawing to the comments, and within a few days, THIS was posted on his blog. of course, a bit of CONTROVERSY AND HONOR followed.

i contacted jeff and he spoke with me about life, the piece, and thoughts on life with a blog. it was one of the most thrilling experiences i have ever had. being completely honest, he is in a three way tie for numero uno on my list of inspirations. within a week, i was working on the billy joel piece, which shows a drawing of every event that mr. joel mentions in the song. next, the research came, then sketches, followed by DETAILED DRAWINGS. all in all the project was long, hard, and one of the most enjoyable i've ever had.

then came the hardest part of the whole project, which was the wait. i didn't hear much, until around DECEMBER a little package arrived. everything looked beautiful and, then, i slipped up in an INTERVIEW by forgetting to mention that the details of the work should probably be kept under wraps until they arrive in stores. in the end, it was an unnecessary worry in a project that was, in the truest sense of the word, incredible to work on.

jeff said that the items should be available for purchase online from DIGITAL GRAVEL, TOBI, REVOLVE CLOTHING, and TURNTABLE LAB. the actual pieces from the collection won't be out for another few weeks, but i'll do my best to post about them when i see they've arrived in stores.

FOR THE LOWLY SEPARATES.

STORY:
for my lighting studio, ms. summa requested we shoot a still life. the project was extremely open ended and after a bit of thinking and considering, i chose to create a serene scene that hints at the grotesque. i thought the aged, worn masks were a wonderful representation of a glorified facade and the other objects seemed to speak equally as well for a certain joyful, lush feeling.

DEBUT:

(l to r: keith[far right, maroon dress])

STORY:
keith made his comedy debut in downtown hollywood on friday. involved with the new group 'shredding the envelope,' the show was a really funny, good time and it didn't hurt that i was accompanied by the always pleasant ms. brown. if everything turns out as planned, they'll be performing in the los angeles comedy festival. cross the fingers for them!

THE MOON ROSE:

BATHED IN PULP:

STORY:
ms. samantha ask me to help her put some of the finishing touches on her latest photo series. i wish i could take some credit for how nicely these images turned out. as usual, it is just a pleasure being involved in projects so lovely, light, and moving.

THE SERIES:
centering around HENRY DARGER, the photos are a take on a day in the life. being a genuine man of mystery, the face is covered as his feelings were uncovered in these photos; he is a man made up of and known only by his work that completely surrounds him. in turmoil and against the elements, darger created pieces with the sole intention of pleasing himself. working only for these personal passions, darger manipulates and makes work that doesn't care if it is ruined by the elements of life.

a nice, new HOBBY

i hope every WIDOW/WIDOWER sues. hopefully, if every family that has lost someone from cigarettes, sued the cigarette producers, we would be able to put them out of business.

+ imagine how much this could stimulate the economy. picture this - no cigarette companies means that no one spends money on cigarettes. i have friends who smoke about a pack a day(say 3 bucks) every month (30 days), which would give them around 90 extra dollars to spend on books, a movie, dinner with friends, gifts for people, etc.

QUALIA

i understand these bailouts are extremely complicated, but we can't keep bailing out everything. first, the banks. second, the auto industry. now, the MORTGAGES. i don't have an answer, but i do know that we got ourselves into this problem by creating equity/funds/cash that didn't exist. aren't these bailouts creating the same problem? except, this time it is being done directly by the government. (on a side note, i think the only thing that should have been bailed out is the people, a la the mortgages/loans. if the people have money, the economy doesn't suffer. the people create the economy.) thoughts? tell me about it in the comments.
